May 1st Priority Admissions Deadline – Apply While Space is Available

May 1st is our last official application deadline for Fall 2016 admissions! As a priority admissions deadline, it is the last date that we can guarantee space availability in our Fall 2016 cohort. With the deadline only a few weeks away, there are some helpful steps that you can take to ensure than your file is complete by May 1st:

1. Review our application process and requirements.

Our application process is very straightforward with only one online application required for submission, but there are a few application materials that can be more time intensive including the GMAT or GRE, TOEFL or IELTS, and crafting a well-constructed essay.

2. Schedule your exam date(s).

If you have not yet taken the GMAT or GRE exam, you will need to submit a valid score report with your application. It is advisable to register for the exam as soon as possible as open test dates may be limited based on the number of testing centers near you. Tip 1: Depending on the extent of your work history and performance in an undergraduate or graduate degree, you may be eligible to petition for our MBA GMAT/GRE Waiver. It is advisable to review both the GMAT and GRE to determine which exam you are most competitive for so that you can register for an exam date as quickly as possible in case your waiver petition is not granted.

Tip 2: Our office can use the unofficial score report from either the GMAT or GRE as a placeholder while we wait for your official score report to be processed. It is advisable to take the exam for which you are most competitive; however, the GMAT exam does provide an unofficial score report the day of your exam while the GRE adds an unofficial score report to your MyGRE account 10 days after your exam date. So, if you’re trying to apply with a limited time frame, the GMAT can be a faster option.

Tip 3: You can submit your application without a GMAT or GRE score report. While your file will remain incomplete until your score report is received, submitting your application will allow our admissions team to process your file and alert you to what materials have been received and any materials still needed for your file to be complete for review while you study for and take the GMAT or GRE exam.

If you are an international student and do not fulfill the “Valid Proof of English Language Proficiency”requirements, you will need to submit a valid TOEFL, IELTS or PTE-Academic score report with your application. You can utilize the same tips as those listed for the GMAT or GRE exam.

3. Obtain official transcripts from all institutions attended.

For our admissions process, applicants will need to submit unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended, including community college or transferred courses and, in some cases, study abroad courses if the grades are not included on your degree-granting institution’s transcript.

Tip 4: Most institutions now allow access to official transcripts electronically, which is a permitted form of an official transcript for our admissions process if the transcript is sent electronically directly from your institution to Portland State University’s Graduate Admissions Office. Additionally, if you have an opened copy of an official transcript in your personal records, you can scan and attach it to the application directly.

Please note: for international students, as a request for official transcripts can take substantial time, it may be advisable to request an official copy of all transcripts now to ensure that your formal admission can be processed and I-20 paperwork can be issued in a timely fashion if you are recommended for admission by our department.

4. Contact appropriate university offices as related to your specific needs.

Depending on your circumstances, you may benefit from connecting with one of the following offices during the admissions process in preparation to start our MBA program this fall if admitted:

Office of Graduate Admissions – to confirm the receipt of official transcripts, check on I-20 paperwork for international students, etc.

Office of Financial Aid – to confirm the steps for applying to FAFSA, schedule financial aid advising appointment to discuss financing options, deadlines for accepting a financial aid award, etc.

University Housing – to explore different on and off-campus housing options, how to apply for on-campus housing options, etc.

Veterans Services – to schedule an advising appointment to discuss how to apply and establish eligibility for Veterans Education Benefits, review the veterans services available to incoming and current PSU students, etc.

While it is beneficial to submit your application by the May 1st deadline, if you are concerned about the limited time to prepare for the GMAT or GRE, obtain transcripts, or gather other application materials, please note that we historically have space in our MBA program up until July or August. For that reason, it may be possible to submit an application, including score reports during that time and there still be spaces available in our Fall 2016 cohort.
